Wicked pissah

Mr. Chicky and I had an actual date yesterday. A date! Where there was no child clinging and crying and wanting and demanding! No cries of "Cah Cah!" from the backseat (that's 'cracker' for those of you not versed in toddler-ese, not a plea for a diaper change). It was sublime.

It was a mid-afternoon date, but still... A date's a date. We went to an open house (more on that later this week when I get around to purging myself of it) and then we saw "The Departed".

Or, The Depaahhted, as we like to say around here.

It may have been the golden glow around the whole outing that made me really like the movie but I did, I really liked the movie. There were some problems with it (a few funny cuts, some hanging story lines that were never resolved) but overall it was good. Since movie reviews are usually boring I'll sum it up in a few bullet points:

(Get it? "Bullet" points? Mob movie? Lots of guns? Sheesh.)

  • Jack Nicholson - Excellent
(well, duh, he's Jack. He's always stellar.)
  • Inside jokes about the region - Good
(if you're from here, that is. If you're from anywhere but New England they'll go right over your head. Poo poo to you.)
  • Accents - Surprisingly Good
(except Alec Baldwin's, Mr. Chicky thought his was pretty bad. And since Mr. C is from one of those tony, monied towns outside of Boston where no one has a distinguishable accent he must be an expert. Right?)
  • Leonardo DiCaprio starting to look like a grown man - Good. Very Good. I applaud this new stage in his development.
(I never found him to be that attractive but after seeing this movie I could be persuaded into thinking otherwise)
  • Hot sex scene involving Leonardo DiCaprio and someone else I won't divulge here as to not ruin it for you if you haven't seen it yet - Excellent. Fantastic. Fabulous. Rwaaawr. Worth the price of admission.
  • Incorporating so many big name actors into one movie without any one actor being the obvious scene stealer - Pretty good.
(Except when Jack was on the screen. The director could have stuck him into that sex scene and he still would have stolen the spotlight from the hot action. Did I mention it was hot?)
  • Violence - Not my favorite part but necessary to the plot and not usually gratuitous.
  • Soundtrack - Good
(Van Morrison and the Band doing a cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" - I know. That one had to grow on me - Dropkick Murphy's. The Rolling Stones. 'Nuff said.)
  • The Ending - Hmmmm....

The Ending. I'm still on the fence about that. If you've seen it let me know what you think. There's still parts of it that I just don't understand. Now I have to wait for the DVD to come out so I can watch the deleted scenes and then I can piece together what happened.
Over all I'd give "The Departed" two thumbs up and a rating of WP - for Wicked Pissah, as in:

"Dood, bang a u-ie and meet me at the packie on Wistah Street. You need to come see The Depaahhted with me. It's wicked pissah."*

Heh

** Translation: My friend, turn your car around and join me at the liquor store on Worcester Street. We will attend a screening of The Departed. It's phenomenal.

  1. You're the one-millionth (or so) person to reccomend this movie. I'm feeling more and more guilty every day that passes without me seeing it!

  2. Wait ... uh... why do we have to go the liquor store first if it's a good movie? I don't get it.

I really want to see this. But since babysitters don't often appear on our doorstep begging to watch the baby, adorable as he is, I'll have to wait till it's on pay per view.

  3. This is bizaare. Afew weeks ago my parents were here so Hubby and I had an afternoon date...in which we went to a few open houses and then saw The Departed...yeah. Weird.

I agree with your review for the most part. For me though the movie went way downhill about 2/3rds of the way through. It seemed like just as it was going to get really good it just got lost. Hubby and I both felt like you- something weird happened when they cut it. They lost some crucial stuff, even leaving a few things totally hanging. We still enjoyed it though because hell, we were out on our own wthout the tot...and there was a sex scene...with Leo, who, unlike you I have ALWAYS found attractive. Leo, also known as River Phoenix's replacement.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Beth, now that you mention it ... it really did seem like someone pushed the re-boot button with the death of River Phoenix and out popped Leonardo DeCaprio

  5. Comfortably Numb? Gosh, haven't thought of that since it was the Sr. Prom theme song. Yea, I know, an odd choice but who's gonna argue with 500 teenagers?

  6. I have the same question as Mrs. Fortune.

We almost went to see this on our date night this weekend but I vetoed it. Maybe I spoke too soon...will reconsider for next time. Thanks :)

  7. I don't live anywhere near a movie theater, so it's all moot for me. Moot, I tells ya.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Mrs. F and SS - Unfortunately, it's not that uncommon in these parts for people to do a "packie run" and drink in the parking lot before going into the movies. So I've heard. I've never done anything like that myself.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I myself am partial to the "Woostah" dialect of New Englandese. It is a subtle shift from the more Bostonian "Wistah" school of speech. But no matter your preference, we'll always have packy runs :)

  10. Ah, a movie recommendation. Yay! We have to get out to the movies more often. Maybe we'll go see this one. I'll just tell the husband he'd like it cuz there's lots of violence when secretly I'm going to see the steamy sex scene with an-all-grown-up Leonardo Di Caprio. he he

  11. I'm going to see it later this week. I can't wait. I've heard nothing but glowing recommendations and most of my friends from Beantown swear that the accents are really pretty awesome. Which is unusual, as you well know.

Speaking of pul-a-uie, did you see the Jack Williams commercial where he said that? Totally cracked me up the first time I saw it. It was Wicked Pissah.

Hey, are you moving closer (she says hopefully)?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thank you for providing the Massachusetts-to-the rest of the U.S. translation. Could you please clear up for me exactly how to pronounce "Worcestershire"?

I want to see that movie now. Leo DiCaprio definitely has hottie potential.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I have been waiting to hear someone say if hte movie was good or not......I have been seeing the commercials and wanting to think it would be good, but not feeling very convinced. Now I feel intrigued as to who is in that hot scene.....I guess I will have to go see it now!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Unanswered questions. I don't know if I have more room for questions, but I still want to see it. With that all star cast it has to be good.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Damn, I miss those packies here in North Carolina, lol. They have NO CLUE what I say when I first asked where one was. We have to buy beer at the grocery store - not nearly as many good stories about going to a grocery store to buy alcohol, lol.

I actually just wrote a post about The Departed today, and how I wanted to see it. I was quite worried about the accent, I know Matt Damon was good to go, but I was a bit worried about Leo. I didn't think he could pull it off! This makes me want to see it even more now!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Love the link! Thanks, Mrs. Chicky! You are wicked awesome, know that? Look forward to seeing the movie when I have the time, which should be somewhere in 2008-2009. (But your review echoes others I've heard: it's good.)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Outstanding movie, I agree! And I was also impressed with the accents. Then again, Markie Mark is a native, no? Alec Baldwin's, though, was way too Lawng Guyland for me ... but not horrible.

The problem with the ending was that in Calcutta, USA, the entire theater laughed. WTF? Then again, there were people in attendance with their 6-7 year old children ... at the late show ... again, WTF?

    ReplyDelete
  18. A date! Congrats! And a movie!

I haven't seen a movie since WonderBaby arrived. And our one attempt at a date ended with a sick baby. But we'll keep trying. You've inspired me.

    ReplyDelete
  19. But have you seen, Marie Antoinette? I really loved it... so beautifully filmed, but VERY Sofia Coppola... minimal diaglogue and lots of significant looks...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Very cool review. Good to know.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I confess I had to skim this because I don't like knowing anything about the movies I want to see...and this is one of the few I actually want to see. Although Nate is begging me to see Jesus Camp first.

    ReplyDelete
  22. About Leonardo DiCaprio...I agree that it's nice to see he's filled out some. Even if his beady little eyes make him look the Devil.

I never bought scrawny little Leo with voluptuous Kate Winslet for one second...he needed some meat on dem bones.

    ReplyDelete
  23. We need a date. I think when we have some extra cash we'll head out to see this movie. Tim really wanted to see it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I remember movies. And Martin.

Sigh. Hope Netflix gets it soon.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That's definitely a movie I would like to see. Perhaps hubby and I should schedule our own date night?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I got to see this on a date with the hubby as well. And to pick a movie we both liked--the stars must have been aligned.

I'm glad to hear others liked it as much as I did.

Like you I had to come right back and write about it--though no where as well as you.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ha.

And here I thought the Bahstin accents in the trailer were kind of grating and fake-sounding.

I totally give myself away by saying wicked all the time. And packie. And bubblah. And grinder.

    ReplyDelete
  28. A movie...? They still have those?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I cannot say wicked pissa and not laugh.

    *giggle*

    I know. I'm a dixie dork.

Leonardo in a good sex scene?
